The Niskayuna Central School District is celebrating three educators who joined the ranks of a small number of teachers in New York state by becoming National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT). Congratulations to instrumental music teacher Stacey McClenon, Iroquois health teacher Jennifer Christiano, and Niskayuna High School vocal teacher Christina Pizzino-Catalano.
National Board Certification, the most respected professional certification available in K-12 education, was designed to develop, retain and recognize accomplished teachers and to advance student learning and achievement.
There are approximately 2,458 National Board Certified Teachers in New York state. With 28 board-certified teachers on its staff, Niskayuna is proud to have one of the highest percentages of educators who have achieved this certification. According to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, Niskayuna ranks fifth in the state for its number of new board-certified teachers. District numbers continue to grow, with an additional five staff members currently working towards the designation.
“This is a prime example of Niskayuna’s mission in action. Our students are being taught by those who see value in lifelong learning themselves,” shared Superintendent Carl Mummenthey. “These talented educators help us provide the high-quality educational experience in our buildings we’re known for. We are so thankful to have them on our team.”
Teachers must maintain their certification every five years by submitting a portfolio documenting their professional accomplishments. Niskayuna High School Social Studies teacher Kristen Ryan renewed her certification this year. Three additional staff members are currently working on the renewal process.
“I am so proud of all of our educators, but I am especially excited for these three individuals who have put in significant work to become National Board Certified Teachers,” said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction Jess Moore. “Our students, schools and their colleagues will all benefit from their commitment to their profession.”
