Revived Continuing Education program strengthens community learning opportunities

Continuing Education Zumba instructor leading a class The pursuit of a new hobby or the discovery of a hidden talent just got easier for Niskayuna residents.

Whether you’re looking to sweat it out in a high-energy Zumba class, master the art of knitting or enhance social media skills for your small business, Niskayuna’s revived Continuing Education program is back to prove it’s never too late to learn something new.

The program, which invites all residents 18 and older to explore a wide variety of topics, recently returned after several years. Director of Professional Learning and Continuing Education Amy Isenhart was instrumental in bringing the beloved initiative back to the district.

“Our goal was to create a space where the community can connect, share passions, innovate and rediscover the joy of learning together,” said Isenhart. “Seeing the halls filled with adult learners again has been incredibly rewarding.”

Reestablishing the Continuing Education program is one element of the district’s current strategic plan, which outlines priorities for 2024-27 in the district. The return of Continuing Education attests to the district’s efforts to build partnerships across the community to enhance learning opportunities for students, staff, families and the larger community.

One of the most popular courses offered in the fall, “Zumba Fitness: Get Moving and Have Fun!” will be offered again in the spring. Instructor Kim Perkins shared her Zumba passion with others through eight sessions geared toward adults of all fitness levels.

Perkins intentionally selects music that radiates positivity, hoping participants leave her class feeling joyful, confident and refreshed.

“I love to see participants smiling, catching on to the moves, laughing and having a good time while improving their overall health,” said Perkins “There is enough hardship in our lives and we need more joy!”

Beyond the dance floor, the bocce courts became a space for friendly competition. The six-week course invited adults of all skill levels to master the game’s strategy in a relaxed, social atmosphere. For many participants, the course provided an opportunity to make new friends and enjoy a shared sense of community.

Following the successful fall relaunch, spring sessions will feature the same returning instructors alongside several new experts and expanded course offerings.

To ensure the program is accessible to everyone, residents aged 55 or older are eligible for a $5 senior discount on all paid courses. Those living outside the Niskayuna district may also participate for an additional $5 fee.

Registration for spring courses is open now until Feb. 25 with courses beginning on March 2.
