Niskayuna’s Lesly Garcia Wins 2025 Congressional Art Competition

Lesly Garcia, a talented student artist from Niskayuna High School, has been named the 2025 winner of the Congressional Art Competition for New York’s 20th Congressional District.

Lesly Garcia was selected as the 2025 Congressional Art Award Winner. She is joined by New York Congressman Paul Tanko, right, and

Lesly’s powerful painting, A Man’s Job, was selected by Congressman Paul Tonko and will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol complex in Washington, D.C. for an entire year. This prestigious honor is a testament to Lesly’s creativity, artistic skill, and dedication to her craft.

“A Man’s Job is dedicated to my mother who went to college and chose a career path that was very male dominated,” Lesly said. “This meant my mother had to fight for her place in a room full of men. As a Mexican woman who immigrated to the U.S., she has done the impossible and is proud to show her success and story. She taught me the importance of being a hard-worker and fighting for my success.”

According to Sara Bussert, K-12 Director of Art and Design at Niskayuna, Congressman Tonko expressed how proud he is to support this program and recognize the exceptional talent of students in the 20th District. Niskayuna is honored to have Lesly’s work represent the community in such a significant way.

In addition to Lesly, several other Niskayuna High School students had artwork selected for this year’s regional show:

  • Iris Liu, Imposter Syndrome – Grade 12
  • Finn Christiana, Indigenous – Grade 11
  • Lesly Garcia, A Man’s Job – Grade 11

Held annually by the Congressional Institute, the Congressional Art Competition showcases the talents of high school students from across the United States. Since the competition’s inception in 1982, more than 650,000 students have participated. Each congressional district submits one winning artwork to be displayed in the Capitol, giving young artists the opportunity to represent their communities on a national platform.
