Jooha Song’s journey started in Niskayuna and now he’s headed to South Korea.
Song, a 2025 graduate of Niskayuna High School and Paralympic swimmer, will represent Team USA at the 45th National Paralympic Games in Busan, South Korea.
Song began swimming at two years old and later got involved with Niskayuna’s varsity swim team and Unified Sports, where he found both athletic growth and lasting friendships.
“Swimming is my favorite sport,” said Song. “I can’t wait to go in the pool for the first time!”
During his time with the varsity swim team and other Niskayuna Unified sports, Song formed a close bond with teammate Luke Cassella.
“He’s come so far as a person and as a swimmer,” said Cassella. “If you mention the name Jooha, everyone [at the high school] knows who you are talking about.”
Before Song’s departure for South Korea, members of the varsity swim team, Unified Sports, Nisky Friends and the Niskayuna community came together to celebrate his achievements with a heartfelt send-off in the high school cafe.
Song was overwhelmed with joy when he arrived at the celebration.
The send-off party included pizza, homemade Korean food prepared by Song’s mother and cake. Many of his varsity swim and Unified teammates decorated the space with posters showing support for him.
Before cutting the cake, Social Worker and Nisky Friends Advisor Meg Farquharson gifted Song a hat with the Niskayuna logo on it. She also handed out red friendship bracelets to those in attendance to help everyone feel more connected to Song while he competes in South Korea.
The Paralympic Games are scheduled for Oct. 31-Nov. 5 in Busan, South Korea, across 38 event venues.
Song has also been selected to participate in the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games in Minneapolis, Minn., June 20-26, 2026, as an Alternate Athlete.
