Niskayuna High School junior Ayesha Afghan was recently honored with the prestigious Young Women in Leadership Award by the Zonta Club.
Ayesha is one of only two students in the entire United States—and one of just fifty in the world—to receive the recognition this year. Along with the title, the award comes with a $5,000 scholarship to support her future goals.
The award (previously known as the Young Women in Public Affairs Award) is given by Zonta International to young women aged 16-19 who show exceptional leadership potential and a real commitment to public service and community causes.

Ayesha has already built a standout resume that reflects a deep-seated passion for leadership and community progress. In addition to completing multiple political internships and finishing numerous fellowships, she has co-founded a non-profit organization, is writing a novel, and is a facilitator and paid debate and public speaking tutor.
At Niskayuna High School, Ayesha serves as the Vice President of Political and Current Events Club, Lead Attorney/President of Mock Trial, News Section Editor and Writer for the school newspaper, and is the Vice President and an active competitor in the Debate Club.
Since 1990, Zonta has given 1,165 awards to 993 young women from 60 countries.
Congratulations Ayesha!
