Beginning with the Class of 2026, students graduating from Niskayuna High School will now be eligible to earn the New York State Seal of Civic Readiness.
The Seal of Civic Readiness is a special distinction approved by the New York State Education Department and established by the New York State Board of Regents. It appears on a student’s high school diploma and transcript and recognizes students who have demonstrated strong civic knowledge, meaningful engagement and a commitment to contributing to their community.
For graduating seniors, this school year represents the first opportunity for NHS students to complete the requirements and earn the seal in time for graduation. Seniors have had the opportunity to learn about the distinction from Director of World Languages and Social Studies, K-12 Michael Palanza.
“We are proud to offer this opportunity as part of our ongoing commitment to preparing students not only for graduation, but for thoughtful and active citizenship,” Palanza said.
For underclassmen, earning the seal is a longer-term goal. Students in grades 9-11 can continue to earn points toward the seal through their social studies coursework and civic learning experiences. These points build over time, allowing students to work toward eligibility throughout their high school careers—there is no rush and no expectation to complete everything at once.
The Seal of Civic Readiness recognizes more than academic achievement. It highlights students who are curious, informed and engaged—qualities that support success in college, careers and civic life beyond high school.
