Creative Career Showcase fosters career exploration

Students and families engaging with a creative career professional at an event boothThe Niskayuna CSD Art Department sang, drew and photographed its way to a significant milestone this week by hosting its first Creative Career Showcase.

The Tuesday, Jan. 13, inaugural event was designed to allow students, families and community members of all ages to explore the wide variety of creative careers and career pathways available locally and nationally.

Emphasizing the importance of career exploration, 10 college admissions and program representatives shared information about post-secondary programs connected to creative fields.

More than 20 creative career professionals hosted interactive tables highlighting their careers and the pathway they took to get there. In addition, 10 creative career professionals led short informational sessions for attendees to learn more about their industries, day-to-day work and career journeys.

“Being in the space that evening, feeling the positive energy, hearing meaningful conversations, and watching creative professionals connect with our students, families as well as one another was incredibly inspiring,” said Niskayuna’s Director of Art Sara Bussert. “It reinforced that the arts are not only valuable, but full of opportunities, and that our art department accomplished something truly special by bringing this community together.”

To help students learn how their interests can begin here at Niskayuna, the Nisk Art Gallery was transformed into a vibrant career-focused exhibition. The gallery featured real-world examples from local creative professions, Niskayuna alumni and Niskayuna teachers. Information about Niskayuna High School electives connected to creative fields was also available throughout the gallery.
