At its Tuesday, July 22, meeting, the Niskayuna CSD Board of Education adopted a new policy on student use of cell phones and other Internet-enabled devices during the school day. The new policy is in alignment with a new law in New York state that restricts cell phones in public schools.
District officials crafted the policy in accordance with state law, while using vital community feedback gathered over the course of the 2024-25 school year from stakeholder groups, including staff, students and families.
Niskayuna leaders waited for additional guidance from the state before officially adopting the policy. After receiving guidance from the state in early July, the district had until Friday, Aug. 1, to adopt a policy or risk losing state funding.
How will the new policy be implemented?
Between now and the Tuesday, Aug. 12, board of education meeting, district leaders will develop an implementation plan to share with the community.
In addition, the district will hold a series of forums to talk about the new policy and answer questions. Dates and times for the forums will be announced in August.
As the school year draws closer, we will share more information with families and staff, and build out a section of our website for reference. Our community is also welcome to email questions or concerns to communications@niskyschools.org.
