District-wide art project to celebrate National Special Education Day

Contribute to the District-Wide Mural

National Special Education Day (December 2) is just around the corner, and Niskayuna Special Education PTA, the Niskayuna Central School District Art & Design Department and C.R.E.A.T.E. Community Studio have teamed up to celebrate. We are inviting students to contribute to a district-wide mural modeled after the work of internationally-recognized street artist Thank You X. We need your custom-designed art to add to our mosaic.

The project will allow students to design a cardstock cube from a template using the art medium of their choice: markers, crayons, paint, stamps, etc. Students will be able to express themselves individually on the cube with whatever inspires them. The mural will highlight how our unique contributions are part of our community fabric.

There are several ways your student can participate:

Each elementary student will be sent home with a blank template and directions in their backpack: Students can create a design at home and return their artwork to school the week of Nov. 28.

Blank templates will be available in counseling offices, social workers’ offices and libraries in each school: Students can drop off their completed artwork with any art teacher in their building.

The mural will be on display at the art department’s Voices & Choices: DEI in the Art Room show on Jan. 10, 2023 from 6 to 7 p.m. at NHS: Templates will also be available at the event for students to create and add to the mural. All student artists who participate in the project will be invited to take part in the exhibit opening!
