Superintendent of Schools Carl Mummenthey has announced his intention to retire from the Niskayuna Central School District at the conclusion of the 2026-27 school year, following a 34-year career in public education that includes five years of service to the Niskayuna school community.
Mummenthey joined Niskayuna as Superintendent of Schools in July 2022. Prior to Niskayuna, he served for eight years as Superintendent of the Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School District and nine years as Superintendent of the Jefferson Central School District.
”Serving as superintendent of the Niskayuna Central School District has been an extraordinary honor and privilege,” Mummenthey said. “Niskayuna is a special community, one that cares deeply about its schools, sets high expectations for its students and educators, and continually looks for ways to improve. I am tremendously proud of what our team has accomplished together and grateful for the relationships I have built with our students, employees, families, Board of Education and community.”
During Mummenthey’s tenure, the district advanced a broad agenda, outlined in part by the district’s strategic plan, Future Focused 2024-27. The work overall focused on the district’s three pillars: curriculum & programs, environment & culture and partnerships. Under these categories, the district made strides in academic excellence, student support, school climate and safety, modernization of its facilities and organizational sustainability.
“I have always believed that the best school systems are built through strong relationships, a willingness to tackle difficult challenges and an unwavering focus on students,” Mummenthey said. “I will leave this role with enormous confidence in our leadership team and board, our faculty and staff, and the direction of this district. There is important work still ahead of us this year, and I look forward to finishing that work with the same energy and commitment we have brought to it from the beginning.”
Planning for the next superintendent
The Niskayuna CSD Board of Education intends to conduct a comprehensive search for Niskayuna’s next superintendent of schools. Additional information regarding the search process, opportunities for community input and the anticipated timeline will be shared by the Board of Education in the coming weeks.
“The Board looks forward to working collaboratively with Mr. Mummenthey to ensure a smooth transition. We are committed to building upon the exciting work already underway in Niskayuna while embracing new leadership and continuing toward a strong and successful future,” said Board of Education President Jessica LaFex.
Following his retirement, Mummenthey plans to remain active in service to mission-driven organizations in education, healthcare, higher education and community development.
“While the time is right to begin this transition, my connection to Niskayuna will remain,” Mummenthey said. “I will always be grateful for the opportunity to have served this remarkable school community and, most importantly, for the people who make Niskayuna such an exceptional place for students to learn and grow.”
