Welcome
The Niskayuna Central School District welcomes all school-age students who reside in the district, and takes great pride in providing them with a high-quality education.
What Do You Need to Register for School?
Families will need to provide the information listed below to complete the registration process. When a family registers a child, that child will be enrolled in our schools the next day or as soon as is practical. In cases where residency may be in question, all documentation is reviewed and a residency determination is made within three days. See the next section for kindergarten registration.
Required Registration Documents
Below are registration packets for students entering the district. Choose between registering a new student or registering a student with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
Required Medical Forms and Immunizations
Required medical forms and immunizations can be found on the Health & Wellness page.
Residency Requirement
To attend Niskayuna CSD schools, a student must live within district boundaries.
Moving In to the District?
Children attending Niskayuna schools must be residents of the school district. However, children of future residents may be enrolled providing the parents/guardians show evidence, in the form of a construction, purchase or rental agreement, that guarantees residence within three months.
Residency Findings
Prior to decisions that a child is not entitled to attend school in the district, the person in parental relation to the child will have the opportunity to submit information concerning the child’s right to attend school in the district. In cases where it is determined that a child is not entitled to attend the schools of such district due to residency, the district will provide written notice of this determination within two business days. This written notice will include the specific basis for the determination, the date when the child will no longer be able to attend school in the district, and information about appealing the decision to the New York State Education Commissioner.
Which Elementary School Will My Child Attend?
All specific residential addresses within the district correspond with an elementary school attendance zone. To learn which elementary school attendance zone your address is in, contact the District Registrar.
Kindergarten Registration
Children must be five years old on or before December 1 of the year they enter kindergarten. A kindergarten registration period typically takes place in January and February. The district will announce those dates on this page and mail registration packets to the families of eligible students we are aware of. In order to be sure you receive this packet, please notify the Registrar’s Office about your child anytime between birth and kindergarten registration.
Elementary School Attendance Zones (Flex Zones)
The district utilizes six flexible attendance zones, or “flex zones,” to help balance elementary school class sizes across the district’s five elementary school buildings. Flex zones are areas where newly entering students may be assigned to one of two or more potential schools based on their address in the district.
Elementary Student Class Size Guidelines
The district’s approach to the management of elementary class sizes as new students enroll is being revised to more effectively promote equity in the educational experience of students and optimize the use of our staff and facilities.
- Learn more about elementary student class size guidelines.
- View Regulation 5001-R Elementary Schools and Attendance Zones.
Voluntary Transfer Program
The district at its discretion may from time to time activate the Voluntary Transfer Program. Through this program, parents with students at a particular grade level, with class sizes that are at or approaching the district guideline, will be notified about the option to voluntarily transfer their children to other specified schools that have space available at that grade level. More Voluntary Transfer Program information can be accessed from Board of Education Regulation 5001-R Elementary Schools and Attendance Zones.
Education of Homeless Youth
The Niskayuna Central School District will ensure homeless children and youths have equal access to the same free, appropriate public education, including a public preschool education, as provided to other children and youths, and access to services that support their success. We are committed to eliminating barriers to the identification, enrollment, attendance and success of homeless students. Board of Education policy provides for the transportation of homeless students in accordance with state and federal law, which gives homeless students the right to designate either the school district of origin or the school district of current location as the one they wish to attend.
For more information about the education of homeless youth, please contact the Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services at (518) 377-4666, ext. 50737.
Help Us Plan for Your Child’s Future
If you have a new baby in your home or a child who may or may not be in our records, please contact the District Registrar with the following information:
- Student name
- Date of birth
- Address
- Parent names
- Phone number
It’s never too early to let us know! Knowing how many children will one day attend Niskayuna schools helps the district plan for the future.
Procedure for Exiting Students or Change of Address
Moving within district
If you’re moving within the district, please inform the District Registrar. You will need to provide the Registrar’s office with proof of address to update your student’s records.
Moving out of the district
If your family is moving outside the Niskayuna Central School District, you will need to fill out a Student Exit Form and return it to the main office of the school that your child attends before the school year ends. A printed copy of the form is also available in each school.
