Overview of Middle School Changes
District residents approved two capital projects in 2021 and 2024. These referenda provided funding for major renovations and classroom additions at both Iroquois and Van Antwerp. The work supports the district’s vision for a high-quality middle school experience and is an important part of the overall capital improvement plan.
Construction at Iroquois was completed and the building was rededicated in November 2025. The renovation of Iroquois includes an expanded campus, 20 new classrooms and upgraded instructional spaces. Renovations at Van Antwerp began in 2025, and will include new classrooms, a library media center, music ensemble spaces and a renovated kitchen and cafeteria.
After careful review, district leaders adjusted the timeline for Niskayuna’s middle school grade reconfiguration and program redesign. The multi-year process of grade-level reconfiguration began earlier than anticipated in September 2025, and is expected to be completed by 2028.
Vision for the Future: Grades 5–8
When construction is complete, Van Antwerp will serve grades 5 and 6, while Iroquois will serve grades 7 and 8. This new structure is designed to create a more connected middle school experience that emphasizes teamwork and collaborative learning in modern classrooms.
Both schools will offer flexible learning spaces where students can meet, work together, and learn with updated technology. The redesign also opens the door for expanded academic opportunities, including accelerated courses for eighth grade and world language instruction for fifth grade. All of this will take place in welcoming, age-appropriate environments that support student success.

Ensuring a Successful Transition
District leaders understand that this is a significant change for the school community and prioritized a smooth transition from the very beginning. Thanks to careful, collaborative planning, our students and staff have begun settling into the new structure with robust support.
The Middle School Redesign Team, made up of administrators and teachers, developed a detailed transition plan. This included schedules, programs, and support systems to meet the needs of students and families. Orientation and transition activities for staff, students, and families were held.

Timeline Expectations
Under the revised schedule, the grade-level reconfiguration began one year earlier than originally planned. Construction at Van Antwerp will also be completed over two years instead of three.
Middle School Transition Timeline
During the 2026-27 School Year
Elementary K-5
Elementary schools will continue to serve students in grades K–5. While renovations are underway, sixth graders will attend Van Antwerp, with construction carefully phased to minimize disruption.
Grade 6

Grades 7-8
Students in grades 7–8 will attend Iroquois.
Starting in 2027-28
Elementary K-4
Elementary schools will serve students in grades K–4.
Grades 5-6
Students in grades 5–6 will attend Van Antwerp.

Students in grades 7–8 will continue to attend Iroquois before moving on to the high school for grades 9-12.
