At its Tuesday, May 12, meeting, the Niskayuna board of education approved the appointment of Matt Ronca as the district’s next director of physical education, health and athletics. He will officially begin his new role on July 1.
Ronca succeeds Larry Gillooley, who is retiring as of Sept. 1, following a long and distinguished career in the district.
He joins Niskayuna from the Mohonasen Central School District, where he has served as director of health, physical education and athletics for the past four years. Prior to his work in Mohonasen, he held similar leadership roles in the Schenectady City School District and Schalmont Central School District, and served as athletic director at Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School District for two years.
“I am honored to join the Niskayuna community,” Ronca said. “With its tradition of excellence, I look forward to collaborating with the dedicated faculty and supporting students as they excel in both academics and athletics.”
Ronca currently serves on the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championship Advisory Committee, the Section 2 Executive Committee, the Board of Athletic Administrators for the Colonial Council, and the New York State Athletic Administrators Association.
Before becoming an administrator, Ronca spent over a decade teaching health and physical education in several area schools. He also brings coaching experience in wrestling, football, track and field and softball.
Ronca holds an associate degree in physical education from Hudson Valley Community College, a bachelor’s degree in physical education from SUNY Cortland, a master’s degree in health education from Sage Graduate School, and an advanced master’s degree in educational leadership from Stony Brook University.
