Update on Scheduled Activities, Including End-of-Year Events

With it now official that we will not be returning to school on-site this year, we want to provide an update on activities on the school calendar, including end-of-year events and celebrations. Please see below.

We know that there are many questions about events and there are also many fun and creative ideas out there. When it comes to recognizing students and marking the end of the year, we too want to be as fun and creative as possible. However, as a school district, we need to take care to have common approaches across our schools due to necessary public health and social distancing measures and to avoid the issues that can be caused by inconsistent plans.

Some of this will take time, but we appreciate your patience and assure you that we are working to make the best decisions we can with our students in mind.

If you don’t see an item on the list below or on the school calendar, please assume that it will not be held or is at least on hold. Some previously scheduled events remain on the school calendar because our intent is to hold them in some way. However, due to current circumstances, the details may change. We will use our communications system to keep stakeholders informed.

Please note the following updates by academic level.

Districtwide

Annual Budget Vote & Board of Education Election

Per Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s recent executive order, the annual school budget vote and Board member election will be held June 9 via absentee ballot only. Eligible voters in the district will be mailed an absentee ballot in the days prior to the vote.

PTO, Booster Club, Friends of Music Meetings

Many PTOs and parent/community organizations have begun to hold virtual meetings. For details, please check the district calendar or look for updates from the individual school/organization involved.

Retiree Recognition

While it will be virtual, we will recognize our retirees in conjunction with a Board of Education meeting as we do each year.

High School

Class of 2020 Graduation

We will be livestreaming a graduation ceremony that includes clips of each member of the Class of 2020 in their caps and gowns and the usual involvement of class officers, a Hall of Fame inductee, and district and school administration. We are also positioned to have the video premier of this ceremony at the Malta Drive-In Theater, with one car allowed per graduate, on Thursday, June 25, assuming such an event is permissible. The latest information about graduation is available here.

Senior Awards

We are planning an evening livestream of the Senior Awards Presentation, and will provide details in the coming days.

Senior Art Show

We are holding a virtual art show to highlight the work of our seniors.

Junior Awards

Junior Awards will be presented in the fall of 2020.

Junior Prom

As previously announced, the Junior Prom (Class of 2021) and all associated events have been rescheduled for Oct. 3, 2020.

Department Awards

Each department will be coordinating the presentation/sharing of award information with students.

Middle School

8th Grade Moving Up

The middle school principals are working with each other and will be working with teachers to identify how to hold this event and celebrate students in a virtual capacity. More information will be shared with families as soon as it is available.

Middle School Orientation for Fifth Grade Parents

Our middle schools are planning to share a recorded presentation of the information that is typically provided at the orientation.

Elementary School

5th Grade Moving Up

The elementary principals are working with each other and will be working with teachers on the best way to celebrate the 5th grade class. We expect this generally to be a common approach across the district, and more information will come from the school as soon as it is available.

Class Lists/Meet Your Teacher

Our elementary principals and teachers have started the process of developing class lists for next year. Although we will not be able to have students meet their teachers in the way they usually do, we will be considering how best to make this connection prior to the start of the new school year.

Kindergarten Screening

We typically hold kindergarten screening on-site in the spring. Given that won’t be possible this year, we are considering holding this in some capacity over the summer or even in the fall. We will reach out to our incoming kindergarten families as soon as we have more information.

Kindergarten Orientation for Parents

We will be holding this as a livestream presentation for the parents of all incoming kindergarten parents in the district and recorded for access afterward. We will communicate the date and details in the near future.
