Seventeen Niskayuna High School student-athletes sign Letters of Intent

Decorated student-athletes set to compete at the next level

On Wednesday, Nov. 14, a group of 17 Niskayuna High School student-athletes took the next step into their futures by signing their National Letters of Intent in a ceremony at the school.

The students were joined by their families, friends, coaches, teachers and school administrators. High School Principal John Rickert briefly highlighted the accomplishments of each student-athlete, followed by the signing of their letter. A listing of each student-athlete with just some of their accomplishments are below.

Wednesday marks the beginning of the NCAA signing period for student-athletes all across the country.

For the student-athletes, the letter represents a formal commitment to the athletic program at their respective colleges and universities, and it also signifies the opportunity for funding for tuition, room and board, and other expenses to be funded over the next 5 years.

Niskayuna High School started the signing ceremony tradition at in 1997 and it has become a part of the high school culture. With Wednesday’s signing, we now have 448 students who have signed to compete at the Division I or Division II levels.

This year’s signing class includes 16 Section 2 champions and 10 nationally recognized athletes. They are:

Claudia Agostino, College of Saint Rose

Claudia is an outstanding student in the classroom with a strong honors and AP program. She will graduate in June with an Advanced Regents diploma.

Claudia plays both lacrosse and field hockey at Niskayuna. She will play lacrosse at the College of Saint Rose in the Northeast 10 Conference. She plans to major in biology.

Hannah Aronowitz, Bentley University

Hannah is also an outstanding student in our Honors and AP programs and she will graduate with an Advanced Regents diploma in June.

She will be a three-year varsity player in our girls lacrosse program. She is a member of a Section 2 Championship team as a defender and midfielder. Hannah is also a member of our girls soccer team.

She will play lacrosse at Bentley College in Massachusetts in the Northeast 10 Conference.

Hannah Bachert, University of Rhode Island

Hannah will graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma in June.

She has rowed for Niskayuna for five years and has a Section 2 Championship in the 2k distance.

Hannah will row for the University of Rhode Island  in the Atlantic 10 Conference. She plans to major in Criminal Justice and Criminology.

Dan Brownell, St. Michael’s College

Dan is an outstanding student, earning scholar-athlete recognition during both football and lacrosse seasons. He was recently given the award the highest average on the football team. Dan will graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma in June.

In football, Dan posted one of the best seasons in Niskayuna history for passing yards and completions. He was a member of the Section 2 Champion and Regional Champion lacrosse team in 2017 and will be a two-year starter in lacrosse. He has 29 career points with 23 goals and 6 assists.

Dan will attend St. Michael’s College in Vermont where he will play lacrosse for in the Northeast 10 Conference.

Annabelle Conover, University at Albany

Annabelle is a four-year varsity player with 107 goals and 40 assists. She is described by her coach Jason Bach as the catalyst of their offense.

Annabelle will join the women’s lacrosse team at the University at Albany and will play in the America East Conference.

She will also graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma in June.

Drew Collins, Southern New Hampshire

Drew will be a three-year member of our boys varsity lacrosse team. He is a Section 2 Champion and Regional Champion. In his time at Niskayuna, Drew has totaled 76 career points, including 53 goals and 23 assists.

He will attend Southern New Hampshire University and play in the Northeast 10 Conference.

Martin Dolan, Binghamton University

Marty is a considered to be one of the best middle distance runners in Section 2. He recently finished third in the Section and competed in the State Championship meet. He is also a scholar-athlete for the 2017 and 2018 cross country seasons, as well as the indoor and outdoor track seasons from last year. He has been a four-year member of our cross country and track programs.

Marty has a mile time of 4:30.11 and a 3-mile time of 14:59.0. His times in the 2,000 meter Steeple Chase of 6:10.17 and the 3,000 meter Steeple Chase of 9:29.33 place him among the best in the country.

He will graduate in June with an Advanced Regents Diploma.

Marty will attend Binghamton University and run in the America East Conference.

Matt Frankel, College of Saint Rose

Matt will be a three-year member of the varsity lacrosse team. He was a member of the 2018 Section 2 Championship team and Regional Championship team. As goalie, he faces some of the toughest offenses and toughest shooters in the state.

Matt will graduate in June with a sequence in Business Education and he
will take his talents to the College of Saint Rose to play in the Northeast 10 Conference.

Nick Fraterrigo, Le Moyne College

Nick will be a three-year varsity letterman on our boys lacrosse team. Nick has 63 ground balls to his credit. He was also a standout on our varsity football team as a receiver and defensive back. Nick is a multi-season scholar-athlete and he will graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma in June.

Nick will play lacrosse for the five-time national champion Le Moyne College Dolphins in the Northeast 10 Conference.

Madeleine Hesler, James Madison University

Maddy is a three-sport athlete in cross country, indoor and outdoor track. She has received scholar-athlete recognition in all three seasons and she will graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma in June.

Her 1-mile time is 5:23 and her 800 meters time is 2:36.84. She is also known for having one of the best 2,000 meter steeplechase times in Section 2 at 7:14.

She will now run at James Madison University in the Colonial Athletic Conference.

Jimmy Joyce, Holy Cross

Jimmy is a dual-sport athlete. He led Niskayuna soccer to an appearance in the Section title game this year and has served as a two-year captain. In baseball, he was a part of the Section 2 Championship team in 2017. This season, he led the Suburban Council in shutouts with 13 and had the highest save percentage.

He is a five-time scholar-athlete award winner and he will graduate in June with an Advanced Regents Diploma.

While he has been recruited for both sports, Jimmy has chosen to play soccer at Holy Cross in Massachusetts in the Patriot League.

Griffin King, Brown University

Griffin King will be a four-year varsity lacrosse member. He is considered by many to be one of the very best lacrosse players in New York State and the nation. He is currently has 173 career points with 106 goals and 67 assists. He is an Under Armour High School All-American and an Inside Lacrosse All-American. Inside Lacrosse has listed Griffin as the 38th best high school lacrosse player in the country.

He committed in his sophomore year to play Lacrosse at Brown University in the Ivy League. He will graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma in June.

Gabriel Nish, Le Moyne College

Gabe will be a three-year varsity lacrosse player. He currently has 76 career points, with 61 goals and 15 assists. He was a 2018 All-Suburban Council All-Star and was a key member of the Section 2 Championship and Regional Championship team.

He will complete a sequence in Business Education this June and he will join his classmate, Nick Fraterrigo at Le Moyne College and play in the Northeast 10 Conference.

Merjan Ozisik, Syracuse University

Merjan is a three-year member of our varsity soccer program and he was one of the team captains this season. Merjan finished his high school career with 26 goals. He is a midfielder and was one of the top scorers in all of Section 2 this season with 13 goals and 7 assists. He was also named the Section 2 Class AA Co-Player of the Year.

Merjan will complete his Advanced Regents Diploma in June. He will
play at Syracuse University in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Jane Reffelt, American University

Jane will be a four-year varsity lacrosse player and a four-year starter as a defender. She was a key member of the 2017 Section 2 Championship team.

Jane will graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma in June, having completed a very demanding Honors and AP Program. She will now play at American University in the Patriot League.

Peyton Reihs, Southern New Hampshire University

Peyton is a three-year starter at attack and midfielder. She has scored 32 goals and has 6 assists. She was also a key member on the 2017 Section 2 Championship team and she was also a member of the girls soccer team.

She graduate in June with a sequence in Child Psychology. She will play at Southern New Hampshire University in the Northeast 10 Conference.

Ava Schroeder, University of New Hampshire

Ava is a three-year starter at center for the girls lacrosse team. She has scored 20 goals and she also has 20 assists. She is one of the best face-off defenders in the area, winning an average of nearly 80% of her face-offs.

Ava will graduate in June with an Advanced Regents Diploma.  She will
play at the University of New Hampshire in the America East Conference.
