School-sponsored clubs and extracurricular activities will be allowed provided they follow social distancing, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage, and cleaning and disinfecting protocols and other COVID-19 guidelines.
School-sponsored clubs and extracurricular activities that can be conducted in a safe environment are permissible in school buildings and on school grounds. They may also continue in the event of another shutdown in a virtual setting.
On-site events and meetings will generally take place during regular school hours to the extent feasible within the schedule (i.e. There will be no on-site before- or after-school events or activities at this time.) On-site, school day meetings and activities are limited to school-sponsored groups. No outside organizations or visitors are permitted except essential visitors as outlined in the Visitors section of this plan.
Fundraising is suspended at this time as our community works together to meet the challenges of COVID-19. Clubs and extracurricular activities are encouraged to contact building PTOs if assistance is necessary.
Clubs and extracurricular activities will need building use approval.
Representatives should contact the following departments to reserve spaces:
Birchwood, Craig, Glencliff, Hillside, Rosendale Elementary Schools – Office Secretary, Principal, and Head Custodian
Iroquois, Van Antwerp Middle Schools – Main Office Secretary, Principal and Head Custodian
Niskayuna High School – East Office Secretary and Eva Jones; Auditorium/Music Areas – Tracy Koste and Eric Hughes; Kitchen – Jeff Bradt. The Head Custodian should also be notified for any use of High School spaces.
District Gyms/Athletic Fields – Cindy Primeau and Larry Gillooley. The Head Custodian in affected buildings should also be notified.
Once a timeline has been established to join these clubs, new members should not be allowed until a second designated opportunity to join clubs is set forth (e.g. late winter or early spring) to maintain safety and limit cohorts.

School Events & Activities
At this time, no outside groups will be permitted use of school buildings outside of the school day.
To the extent possible, especially with regard to large group gatherings (over 50 participants), fall school events and activities will be redesigned for virtual experiences, either recorded or live streamed. This includes events like Back to School Nights, PTO meetings, school assemblies, etc. The schedule of these events will be communicated through the district calendar and details for participation will be shared with families and staff by the principal.
Administrators will schedule school events and activities that can be conducted in a safe manner, for example, portions of newcomers or orientation events. The following considerations must be included in planning these events:
- Limit the total number of any group (school staff included) to 25-50
Total number would be dependent upon size of gathering space
- Staggered start times for groups
- Clear start and end times
- Dedicate and define required entrance/exit, path for travel during event, and restrooms
- All “waiting” must be done in cars, not in or near building
- All areas to be used must be cleaned and sanitized prior to and after group use, in coordination with the custodial staff
- Define a sign-in protocol
- No use of the school kitchen or cafeteria/food service
Anyone attending an approved school activity must follow all safety protocols as listed in this document in the Health & Safety section of this plan.
