Opioid awareness event to be held at Sept. 24

Niskayuna Central School District parents are invited to attend an opioid awareness event at Niskayuna High School on Monday, Sept. 24, that will include personal stories of addiction and recovery in an effort to educate our community about this important issue. The program is being held through a partnership between the Niskayuna Central School District, the Niskayuna Community Action Program (N-CAP) and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York.

The program will begin with community resource tables at 6 p.m. in the Crossroads area of the High School, and will feature a documentary showing and an interactive panel discussion in the high school auditorium from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 pm.

The panel will include moving and powerful stories from individuals in recovery, family members affected by addition, school personnel, police officers, EMTs, treatment professionals, and young people committed to not using addictive substances providing powerful and moving stories.

The resource tables that will be available at 6 p.m. include intervention, recovery, treatment and prevention organizations, social service agencies, and student clubs that promote youth substance prevention programming.

At 6:30 p.m., the 40-minute documentary “Chasing the Dragon” will be shown in the auditorium. The film features interviews with those who have battled addiction and its consequences. Parents are asked to note that the film contains strong language and graphic images and may not be suitable for some students.

The film will be followed by the panel, which will include an opportunity for audience members to ask questions.

Niskayuna High School is located at 1626 Balltown Road. Please use the main entrance to the high school campus on Balltown Road and use the visitor parking lot to the right of this entrance. Proceed to the entry doors facing Balltown Road and walk directly up the main hallway where you will see the resource tables and entrance to the auditorium in the Crossroads area of the school.
