Dear Niskayuna School Community,
You may be aware that we had a need to temporarily close the high school’s competition gym late last week due to the observance of some deteriorating concrete blocks on the interior. It was determined that this issue is not structural, and at last night’s Board of Education meeting, Director of Facilities Anthony Lento said the gym may be able to reopen as soon as Friday of this week, Dec. 13. The affected concrete blocks were part of the corner cold air return shafts in the gym. Mr. Lento worked with a structural engineer who inspected the gym this past Saturday. It was determined that these shafts were not connected to the exterior walls, alleviating any structural concerns. Based on the engineer’s recommendation, the Operations & Maintenance Department is continuing to remove the concrete shafts and then the area will be covered and prepared for painting.
We will send a follow-up message confirming when the gym is open, which we are hoping will be this Friday or shortly thereafter. We appreciate the patience of our community as we address this issue.
