NHS science department to host lecture on atmospheric & environmental sciences

The Niskayuna High School Science Department is hosting a guest lecturer on Thursday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. in the Little Theater.

Andrea Lang, an Assistant Professor of Atmospheric & Environmental Sciences at the University at Albany, will give an overview of weather and climate prediction and highlight a few current international efforts to create seamless prediction from minutes to years.

Weather forecasting has been occurring for centuries, but it was not until the early 1900s when physicist Vilhelm Bjerknes derived the set of equations used to approximate the global atmospheric flow that modern meteorology was born. In the 100 years of modern meteorology, we’ve learned that mathematical, physical, and chemical considerations of the atmosphere are all important in understanding weather and climate processes.
