Information from the Niskayuna Police Department regarding social media threats

As a follow-up to the message regarding social media threats on Tuesday, Oct. 30, the district is sharing this press release issued by the Niskayuna Police Department later Tuesday evening. We thank the police for their work on this situation and ongoing partnership with the district.

At approximately 3:00 p.m. this date [Tuesday, Oct. 30] the Niskayuna Police Department was contacted by Niskayuna Central School District staff regarding social media postings that made threats of violence to the Niskayuna High School. The Police Department was later contacted from concerned citizens regarding the same posts.

At approximately 5:05 p.m. a 17-year-old male from Niskayuna was interviewed by department staff and an agent with the FBI, the male subject was subsequently arrested and charged with Making a Terroristic Threat, and Solicit Support for an act of terrorism 2nd degree. Both charges are D felonies per the Penal Law of the State of New York. The Defendant was arraigned in the Niskayuna Town Justice Court in front of Judge Stephen Swinton Jr. The Defendant was remanded to the Schenectady County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail/$40,000 bond.

The events of today [Tuesday, Oct. 30] occurred after dismissal so classes were not affected by this investigation.

The Defendant’s name is not being released due to his age and eligibility for Youthful Offender status.
