Board of Education Policy 4513: Library Media Materials Selection and Adoption

While the Board of Education is responsible for the selection of all school materials, it delegates the responsibility for the selection of library media materials to the district’s professional staff.

The selection of library media materials should be based on district guidelines and consultation with administration, faculty and students. the budget allocation for library media materials is recommended by the Superintendent of Schools and is subject to Board and voter approval.

The Board recognizes both the right of students to read a wide variety of materials, including those that may be controversial, and the right of parents to determine that individual materials in the school library collection may not be appropriate for their child. A parental request that specific materials not be given to their child should be honored; however, such requests should not affect the availability of such materials to other students.

The Board directs the Superintendent to develop guidelines or regulations consistent with this policy and the recommendations of the State Education Department for the selection of library media materials and for the review of challenged library media materials.
