Message from the Rosendale Principal – Thursday, March 1

The purpose of this message is to let you know about a situation at school today that resulted in the school being evacuated as a precaution for a short time due to a facilities issue. All students are safe and we are back in the building.

At approximately 11 a.m., school staff members noticed the floor in the cafeteria serving area was buckling and cracking in multiple locations. The cafeteria was immediately cleared. Out of an abundance and caution, and without knowing the cause of the issue, school officials pulled the fire alarm so that the building could be evacuated.

All students proceeded outside and were accounted for. I addressed the students to let them know that they were safe and that while there was no fire, it was not a drill. Police and fire officials arrived around this time, and we decided to go to our evacuation site at Iroquois Middle School at about 11:20 a.m.

The students spent about a half hour in the Iroquois cafeteria. At approximately 11:50 a.m., we received the determination that our building was safe to enter from the Niskayuna Police Department. Our district facilities staff will continue to work on the issue with the floor.

We will make sure that all students have lunch today.

I would like to emphasize that all of the children were safe, and wonderfully cooperative, throughout this situation. If needed, we will provide further information about this through e-mail and our school web page.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact my office.
