On Tuesday, June 7, the Niskayuna Student Work program celebrated another
successful year by thanking the program partners, job coaches, and teachers who
have become professional contacts, references, mentors, prospective employers
and friends. The appreciation breakfast at the District Office is an annual
tradition, and provides an opportunity for the students to say thank you to the
many businesses, community and district partners they work with throughout the
The breakfast also celebrates all that students have accomplished this year through this unique program that prepares students in grades 9-12 for a career through pre-vocational, real-world training and work experience at the various in-district and community sites. They have worked in grocery stores, daycares, school libraries, all while attending classes and learning job readiness skills like interviewing and developing a resume.
The program grew this year to include 17 work sites and another 20-plus activities and events.
It is coordinated by high school teacher John Leclerc.
At the breakfast, students debuted a video that documented the year. They shared their favorite parts of the year and talked about their future aspirations, including attending college, continuing to work on the skills that will be valuable in the workplace and getting a paying job at places such as a grocery store or a restaurant.
