In what has now become tradition, Niskayuna will be sending one of its four Science Bowl teams to Nationals in April. The Iroquois Middle School team came out on top on Saturday, March 5 at the Regional Science Bowl held at GE Global Research in Niskayuna. The team includes Fade Eldridge, Joy Lim, Rohan Menon,Rachel Schmidt and Ian Vernooy.

The Van Antwerp Middle School team, which won regionals 11 of the past 12 years, had a strong showing this year, placing third overall. The team includes  Kevin Kwon, Dennis Plotnikov, Tatiana Malcevic, Suchi Mehta and Shivani Singh.

The first segment of the competition required teams to build and race cars in a hands-on challenge. In these races, the Van Antwerp team placed third while the Iroquois team placed fifth.

The second portion of the competition, gave teams the opportunity to qualify for the national tournament. Students answered individual toss-up questions and team bonus questions. In a series of seven matches, Iroquois won six and tied one, which gave the team a spot in the regional championship against Bethlehem.

With their regional win, the five-members of the Iroquois team earned an all-expenses-paid trip to the National Science Bowl in Washington D.C., April 28-May 2.

Niskayuna High School also sent two teams to compete in the regional Science Bowl. Both teams made it to the final round. Team Nisky-2, made up of Zain Hussaini, Paul Kwon, Geoffrey Nowell, Gideon Schmidt and Evan Schnell, ended in second place behind a team from Bethlehem.

Team Nisky-1 whose members include Andrey Akhmetov, Patrick Chi, Zack LeBlanc, Liam McGrinder and Jason Tang, placed fourth.
