NHS filmmakers showcase their work at the area's prestigious international film festival

Several Niskayuna High School filmmakers from Stephen Honicki's Studio in Video program were selected to have their work screened at this year's sixth annual Ballston Spa Film Festival. This international festival is being held August 2-3 in Iron Spring Park Park and other locations in the village.

This year's festival will present 41 short films, ranging in length from 1 to 11 minutes each. The films come from young filmmakers, emerging student filmmakers and established (but still emerging) filmmakers. Submissions to this established, local film festival arrive from across the country as well as all over the globe. Many of the films have won awards at other film festivals, while some will be making their world or U.S. premiere at the Ballston Spa Film Festival.

Short films from around the world were judged by local professionals along with Hollywood filmmakers. Awards are given in categories for young filmmakers (students under 21 years old) and several general categories for professional adult filmmakers.

The following student films from NHS are being showcased at this year's sixth annual festival:

Red - Jordan Whittemore / Natalie DiCocco

Square - Christopher Lemelin / Jack McGill

Board Of Love - Autumn Flannery / Daniel Leap / Erick McCarthy / Omer Osman / Andrew Thorne / Nick Wagoner

Lioness - Kerry LeVielle / Jordan Whittemore

Pressure Within - Emily Foreman

News To Me - Zack Danek / Jordan Whittemore

The Long Off-Season - Calvin O'Connor

Eggsistentialism - Jeff Twitty / Jacob McKenna

"Pressure Within," written and directed by Emily Foreman, had been selected to be part of this year's High School Regional at Albany Center Gallery as well as the Fulton-Montgomery Community College High School Regional. This short film explores the self-inflicted pressure a young woman puts on herself to succeed. In order to do so, she must find the power and motivation to move forward and get past this buildup of internal struggle.

Another film on this year's slate is, "The Long Off-Season," written and directed by Calvin O'Connor. "The Long Off Season" is a "documentary" that takes one fact in Babe Ruth's life, and twists it around and builds off of that twisted fact for comedic effect. This film won the "Best Comedy" award at this past May's Rod Serling Video Festival held in Binghamton, NY.

Lastly, young filmmaker, Jordan Whittemore has the distinction of being directly involved - as director, writer, cinematographer, or editor - in more student films in one year than any other student in the history of the video program at Niskayuna High School.

If you are unable to attend the FREE festival, you may view the entries - plus other outstanding films - from Niskayuna High School on the "NHSshortcuts" channel on YouTube:

The 2013 BSFF events will be held in downtown Ballston Spa in the Old Iron Spring Park on Front Street and in the Ballston Spa High School Auditorium
