The Niskayuna Central School District Board of Education and Susan Kay Salvaggio, Superintendent of Schools, have reached a mutual agreement providing for Mrs. Salvaggio's voluntary separation from her position effective on April 15, 2014. Mrs. Salvaggio has served as the NCSD Superintendent since July 1, 2011. The agreement acknowledges that Mrs. Salvaggio and the Board have disagreed as to the best course of action to ensure the continued success of the District and that certain philosophical differences have arisen relating to expected performance.
During a special meeting of the Board of Education, held on April 4, 2014, the Board voted to accept Mrs. Salvaggio's resignation and to approve the written separation agreement which serves to cancel the existing employment contract that would have continued to June 30, 2015. The separation agreement includes a severance payment, as well as limited continuation of health, dental and vision benefits for Mrs. Salvaggio.
"Mrs. Salvaggio and the Board have agreed to sever the employment relationship on an amicable basis," said Board President Deb Oriola.
She added, "The Board of Education wishes Mrs. Salvaggio the best in the future and we thank her for her efforts over the past few years. We appreciate her strong voice in advocating for adequate funding for the education of the children of Niskayuna and all children statewide, for her work on the district's STEAM initiative, the International Scholars Program, the Summer Enrichment Program, Strategic Planning, and her overall commitment to addressing the financial challenges the district has faced for several years."
Superintendent Salvaggio stated "I am confident that the leadership provided over the past three years positions the Board to move forward in a manner that will support the success of students, families, staff and the administrative team. I have facilitated tough decisions reflective of the difficult financial times experienced since 2008. I look forward to the opportunities for students created during my tenure benefitting the children of Niskayuna for years to come - the Education Enrichment Fund, International Scholars Program, Summer Enrichment Program, to name a few."
The board will be meeting in the near future to appoint a qualified person to serve as the District's acting superintendent during the interim period while it plans for a process to identify and select a new leader to succeed Superintendent Salvaggio.
Questions regarding this matter should be forwarded to Board President Deb
Oriola as the spokesperson for the Board.
