Monday...March 15, 2010

History Club meets today & tomorrow during Advo in Mr. Ackley’s room, 238.

You’ve got until this evening to read Claudette Colvin by Phillip Hoose, this month’s selection for Survivor Book Club!  They will be meeting tonight at 7 PM in the Media Center.  The book tells the story of an African-American teenager who refused to give up her seat to a white woman on a segregated bus.  Sound familiar?  Except it took place nine months before Rosa Parks became famous for doing the same thing!  Join us with your opinions and snacks!

Drama Club meets this afternoon to rehearse Act I, Scenes 1, 2 & 3.

Homework Club meets this week on Wednesday and Thursday in the Counseling Center.  Take the late bus home at 4:15.

There will be a mandatory meeting for all boys interested in playing modified lacrosse today at 3:30 in Mr. Adamo’s room, 205.  You must see Mr. Adamo if you can’t be there!  Take the late bus home at 4:15.

Attention JV Tennis players:  There is practice today at 3:45 at the high school.  Bring your gray cards with you!  Modified Rowers: Practice starts today at the high school. Take bus # 51 or #70 from Iroquois to the high school at 3:30.

Modified Baseball players:  There will be a mandatory meeting on Wednesday, March 17 after school in the Iroquois gym for anyone interested in trying out.  Remember to get your gray cards.

Attention Girls Softball players:  Freshman tryouts start today from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.  Modified tryouts will start next Monday, March 22 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.  All tryouts are in the Blatnick Gym at the High School.  Make sure your physicals are up to date and you have a gray card filed with the nurse!

Any 8th grader who has a self-selection form for high school courses must turn them in this week in order to get the classes they want!  Any other changes in course selection for next year should also be given to Mr. McAllister or Mrs. Hartman this week!

To all NYSSMA vocal soloists:  several of you have expressed an interest in performing a vocal solo at NYSSMA this Spring.  If you are one of them, please see Ms. Steeley to pick up the forms.  The are due back to her in a couple of weeks!

The very first annual Iroquois Learning Fair is this Friday evening starting at 6:30.  Be prepared to be dazzled!  We’ve got displays planned about everything from solar cars to cats to gardening to combustible Mentos to chocolate! 

This Friday is our March Madness Spirit Day!  The Student Council is hosting college apparel day…wear your favorite college sweats, T-shirts or hats to support your favorite team!

Today is the second of three turn-in days for your magazine orders.  All orders should be put in the large yellow envelope and sent down to the Main Office during homeroom.  The PTO will be in this morning to count them up and determine the prize winners!

The 7th & 8th Grade Social is tonight from 7 – 9 PM in the Iroquois gym!  Admission is $5.00.  There will be a DJ, snacks & games.  This social is for Iroquois 7th & 8th graders only.

Drama Club today after school to rehearse Act II, Scenes 3, 4 & 5.  And anyone interested in working backstage for the Drama Club production of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” should come to the cafeteria today for a meeting with Mr. Jesep.

Homework Club today in the Counseling Center. Take the late bus home at 4:15.

If you’ve studied the Civil Rights movement, you’ve certainly heard the name Rosa Parks, but did you know there was a young girl who refused to give up her seat on the bus before Rosa Parks became famous?  That’s the subject of the next book for Survivor Book Club when they meet Monday night, March 15, in the Media Center at 7 PM.  The name of the book (and the girl) is Claudette Colvin by Phillip Hoose.  Read the book and join us for a conversation and snacks!

And if we aren’t at Survivor Book Club, let’s all go to Proctors Theater Monday evening to cheer on 8th grader Max Schutzman in the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee!  Max will be representing Niskayuna along with Martin Schreiner and Dimple Permaul from Van Antwerp and Andrew Hartana from Craig at the competition.  Don’t forget, that’s Monday March 15th, 5 PM at Proctors!

If you’ve studied the Civil Rights movement, you’ve certainly heard the name Rosa Parks, but did you know there was a young girl who refused to give up her seat on the bus before Rosa Parks became famous?  That’s the subject of the next book for Survivor Book Club when they meet next Monday night, March 15, in the Media Center at 7 PM.  The name of the book (and the girl) is Claudette Colvin by Phillip Hoose.  Read the book and join us for a conversation and snacks!

There is an informational meeting for Boys JV Tennis this afternoon at 3:45 in the old café at the High School.  That’s the one in the front of the building!  Take bus number 51 or 70 over to the high school at dismissal.
