Board of Education appoints Science Director
On
June 20 the Board of Education appointed science
administrator and teacher Jonathan Walter as its
next Director of Science. The appointment was
effective July 1.
"Mr. Walter brings
a strong background in chemistry, physics and
math. His technical engineering background,
extensive teaching and previous experience as a
department leader make him well suited to meet
the challenges of our K-12 science program as we
move forward," said Superintendent Kevin
Baughman.
Walter
said he was excited about the appointment. "I am
delighted to have the opportunity to serve as
Director of Science in the Niskayuna Central
School District," he said. "I look forward to
working with the teachers, students and
community of Niskayuna to continue the tradition
of excellence in science education."
Walter succeeds
Paul Favata, who left the district in fall 2004.
Baughman's recommendation to appoint Walter
followed an extensive search process that
included input from parents, staff and
administrators.
For the past
year Walter has been an active consultant in
science education for numerous area school
districts, while pursuing a doctorate in
education administration from the University at
Albany.
Walter served
as Director of Instruction in math and science
for the Albany City School District from 2001 to
2004, and as Fort Plain Central School District
Science Coordinator from 1993 to 2001. He also
taught chemistry and physics at Fort Plain from
1991 to 2001.
While at Fort
Plain, Walter was also an adjunct faculty member
at Syracuse University and a Chemistry Mentor
(conducting workshops for teachers and
administrators) for Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery
BOCES. Previously he was an electrical engineer
for Creative Electric in Auburn.
Walter has a
bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from
Union College and a master's degree in
teaching/mathematics education from SUNY
Cortland.
Walter resides
in Colonie.
