Internationally-known neurosurgeon named to
Niskayuna Hall of Fame
The Niskayuna Hall
of Fame Selection Committee is pleased to
announce that Dr. Stephen J. Haines,
Niskayuna High School Class of 1967, is the
2003 Hall of Fame inductee.
Dr. Haines was
honored at Niskayuna High School's commencement
ceremony on June 24, 2003 at Proctors Theater.
The Hall of Fame -- located at the main entrance
of Niskayuna High School and founded in 1983 --
recognizes Niskayuna graduates who have made
significant contributions to their professions
or communities.
Dr. Haines is a
professor and the Department Head of
Neurological Surgery at the Medical University
of South Carolina. He is an
internationally-known neurosurgeon who has had
an active and versatile career, both
academically and clinically. He has been
principal investigator in seven medical studies,
and a co-investigator in nine others. His
surgical contributions have been in the
difficult fields of pediatric neurosurgery,
skull base and brain stem lesions, facial nerve
lesions and the preventative use of antibiotics.
Dr. Haines'
current bibliography includes more than 300
articles, books, chapters, reviews and invited
lectures. He has been a visiting professor at 11
universities and has given 16 presentations in
various other countries.
Dr. Haines
earned a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth in
1971 and his medical degree is from the
University of Vermont College of Medicine. He
lives in Vermont.
