October 24-28 was New
York State Board of Education Week -- if you see board members,
please thank them for all they do for Niskayuna students and
schools!
Craig students collect school supplies for Gulf
Coast children

Craig Elementary School
students recently finished their collection of more than 100
school supply kits for students affected by Hurricane Katrina.
Above, fourth graders who helped organize the supplies display
some of the bags. Great job!
Donate your old glasses to someone in need
Van Antwerp Middle
School's 73 Team is collecting eye glasses for the Lions Club
and the
Gift of Sight Foundation. Used glasses are tested, cleaned
and sent to people in need. Glasses can be dropped off at the
Van Antwerp main office, or call teacher Catey Merriman at
370-1243 for more information.
Preschool Story Hour and 1,000-Book Kid programs
available
Do you have a child who
will enter kindergarten in Niskayuna schools next fall?
Free Preschool Story
Hour programs are offered in all elementary schools. All
Niskayuna children are also invited to participate in the
1,000-Book Kid Program.
Homecoming weekend
Thank
you to district Groundsmen Jim Stapleton and Mahey Nuhu, for
painting a giant "N" in the center of the high school's football
field for Homecoming!

Students, staff help in Gulf Coast relief
Niskayuna students and
staff are helping with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts
in a variety of ways. For instance, Glencliff and the high
school are making donations to a Texas school, Hillside is
selling beads to benefit the Red Cross, and
Iroquois is
raising donations to help pets displaced in the hurricane.

National Merit Commended students named
Congratulations to the
following students, who have been named "Commended Students" by
the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for placing in the
top 5% on the PSAT exam. They are: Evan Ballan, Brandon Bartell,
Jamie Brooks, Stephanie Cogen, Matthew Conlon, Carolyn Dartt,
Erik Donhowe, Rachel Hoorwitz, Leanne Merrill, James Mobley,

Rosendale recognized during statewide bike tour

On September 30
Activ8Kids!, a statewide bike tour encouraging healthy eating
and activity among children, stopped at Rosendale Elementary
School. (Above, students greet the bikers in a school-wide
assembly.) Rosendale was also recognized by Activ8Kids! for its
work to promote healthy lifestyles for students --
congratulations!
Best of NiskArt 05 on display at NiskArt Gallery
The reception for this
exhibit -- featuring artwork from grades 1-12 -- is scheduled for
Tuesday, October 11 from 6:30-8 p.m.

Operation Safe Stop meant to raise awareness of bus
safety
Every
day motorists illegally pass stopped school buses, endangering
the lives of students. To help raise public awareness of this
danger, police and transportation agencies are joining together
on Thursday, October 6 for Operation Safe Stop.
