Residents pass budget, bus proposition
Niskayuna residents approved the
proposed 2004-05 district budget by a vote of 1,945 to 1,139 on May 18. Also:
-Residents approved a proposal to purchase buses by a vote of 2,209 to 855
-Three Board of Education members were elected: David Hudson (1,907 votes), Jeanne Sosnow
(1,833) and Jane Carol Glendinning (1,779)

Lord of the Rings music editor visits

Jonathan Schulz, music editor for the Lord of the Rings
movies, visited three Niskayuna schools May 12 to tell students about the process of
adding music to films. Above, Schulz visited the high school's MIDI Technology class, in
which students learn how to arrange and compose music on computers for film and video.
High School Senior Art on display
Come see artwork by
Niskayuna High School seniors, now on display through June 11 in
the Nisk-Art Gallery. The gallery is open during school hours
(stop in the main office to get a visitor's pass, or call
382-2511, Ext. 4337 to make an appointment). Everyone is also
invited to the exhibit's reception on Tuesday, June 1
at 7 p.m.

"Johnny B. Goode" rocks Birchwood Elementary School

Birchwood Elementary School recently celebrated
the district's 50th anniversary with a special
assembly describing the history (including popular culture) of the 1950s. Included was a
performance of Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" by Birchwood students (above).

principal. |
The Board of Education has appointed Debra Berndt as
Birchwood Elementary School Principal, effective July 1. She will succeed Tom Buckley, who
is retiring this spring after 32+ years of service to the district. Debra is currently
principal at Salem Elementary School.
The Board of Education also recently appointed Gail Moon
as director of English for grades 6-8 and Eva Jones as coordinator of English for grades
9-12. Congratulations!

Meet the four Board of Education candidates tonight
The public is invited to Meet the Candidates
Night on Monday, May 10 -- tonight! -- at 7 p.m. in the Van Antwerp Middle School
auditorium. At the event -- sponsored by the PTO Council -- residents will have the

High school students, staff participate in day of service during spring recess

On April 16 Niskayuna High School students and
staff participated in the Schenectady County Youth Service Day, helping with a variety of
activities from cleaning up Central Park to working with senior citizens. Above, some
students and staff gather before a fundraising walk around Central Park. Niskayuna
participants carried purple balloons in honor of student Stephanie Bomeisl, who had served
on the event's steering committee.
