Van Antwerp Middle School students make their mark

On Sunday, March 13, Van Antwerp sixth- and
seventh-graders created two murals at Double H Hole in the Woods Ranch, a camp for
critically ill children. Fifteen students took part in the project, which was funded by a
grant from the Niskayuna Community Foundation. Students will return to the camp later this
school year to paint two more murals. Great job students!
Birchwood 1,000-Book Kid Kickoff
Children who are eligible for kindergarten in the
fall of 2005 and 2006 and who live in the Birchwood Elementary School attendance zone are
invited to the 1,000-Book Kid Kickoff Event on March 31 from 6:45-8 p.m. The
evening will include sign in (6:45-7), program explanation/story time (7-7:30) and
make-your-own-sundaes (7:30-8) Call Mrs. Toy at 372-1683 by March 24 to register.

Iroquois Community Night is coming!
All Iroquois Middle School students and their
families, and all incoming Iroquois fifth-graders and their families, are invited to
Iroquois' Community Night on March 31 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Attend for a fun
night of food and celebrating Iroquois and its students.
Tenth-grader chosen for German exchange
Congratulations to tenth-grader Gabriel Laos, who
has been selected to participate in the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program. Through
the program, sponsored jointly by the United States Congress and the German Bundestag
(legislative chamber), 250 students from the U.S. go to Germany for a year to live with a
host family and attend school. Congratulations Gabriel!
Middle School students head to states
Congratulations to Iroquois student Andrew
Roberts and Van Antwerp student Elizabeth Ha, who have been selected (through a rigorous
qualifying test) to participate in the New York State level of the National Geography Bee.
They both previously won the local level of the geography bee at their respective middle
schools. Great job!
Boys lacrosse parent/coaches meeting Wednesday
A boys lacrosse parent/coaches meeting is
scheduled for Wednesday, March 23 at 7:15 p.m. in the high school old cafeteria.
All parents are invited.
High School Foreign Language
Department hosts Lip Sync Contest
The Foreign Language Department is sponsoring a Lip Sync contest for Niskayuna High School
students on Tuesday, March 22 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Students will
perform songs in Spanish, German and French. Admission is a canned good or donation, to
benefit local food pantries. Call 382-2511, Ext. 4321 for details.
Board of Education Saturday meeting

Please note: The Board of Education's meeting scheduled for Saturday, March 19 has been
canceled. The board's next meeting will be Monday, March 21 at 7 p.m. in the District

High School hosting student/staff
talent show to benefit tsunami relief Friday
Niskayuna High School is holding a Tsunami Relief Talent Show on Friday, March 18 at 7
p.m. in the high school auditorium. Tickets are $5 at the door and all donations will go
to tsunami relief. All are invited.
Niskayuna students recognized at Model U.N.
Students from Niskayuna High School's Model United Nations Club in
January attended the Colombian Model United Nations Conference in New York City. At the
conference students debate, caucus, resolve crises and develop resolutions, similar to
actual U.N. proceedings. Several students won awards at the conference: Monisha Datta
(Best Delegate), Addy Pagano (Honorable Mention), Zach Goldstein (Verbal Commendation) and
Josh Xiong (Best Position Paper). Congratulations students!
High School seeks donations to send to alumni serving in Iraq and Afghanistan
This week (March 7-11) Niskayuna High School is
collecting various items, from toothbrushes to packaged food, to send to alumni serving in
Iraq and Afghanistan. If you would like to donate, details
and a full list of items being collected can be downloaded here. (This is a Microsoft
