Latin program honored by state association
Niskayuna
Central School District's Latin program has
received a state-wide award honoring quality
Latin programs and Latin teachers of strong
dedication and creativity.
The program
received the 2005 June U. Stillwell Founders
Award for the Outstanding Latin Program in New
York State from the Classical Association of the
Empire State. CAES is a non-profit professional
organization of teachers and professors of
Ancient Latin and Greek.
"We consider the
program a model of high standards and
achievement," said CAES Scholarship and Award
Chairperson Linda Emanuel, in the district's
notification letter. "Your teachers, Ms. Meghan
Miller and Mr. Thomas Caffrey, exemplify the
best qualities of educators in the Classics and
their fine portfolio presents an impressive and
very challenging program which reaches many
students and encourages them to excel."
Niskayuna High
School offers five levels of Latin courses,
including honors and advanced placement. Student
interest in the Latin program has been growing,
and last year 229 of the high school's 1,465
students took a Latin class.
"I feel proud to
work with such outstanding educators as Ms.
Miller and Mr. Caffrey, and it is due to their
efforts that Niskayuna's Latin program has been
designated as the most outstanding in New York
State," said Niskayuna Director of Foreign
Language Edward Alston. "It is wonderful to see
how enthusiastically our students have devoted
themselves to the study of Latin. Our entire
school community can be proud of this honor."
The award will be
formally awarded at CAES' Annual Institute in
Saratoga Springs on October 21.
