Coaches recognized
On June 20 the Board of
Education recognized four coaches for their years of service and
wins:

Recognized were (from left): Mike Stone for 100 wins in boys and
girls swimming; Mike Vorgang for 100 wins in boys lacrosse, and
Todd Templeton for 100 wins in ice hockey. Also recognized was
John Furey for 25 years of coaching service and 100 wins in
baseball. Congratulations!
2005 Retirees recognized by Board of Education
In a ceremony on June 6, retiring staff were
honored by the Board of Education for their many years of dedication and commitment to
Niskayuna schools. Retiring are: Margery Amerling, Ken Ashe, Carol Baldwin, Candi Bandura,
Bill Bandura, Carol Bodenstab, Carolyn Bourgeois, Tony Brandone, Kent Burchill, Barb
Capone, Donna Cavallaro, Fran Cuerdon, Luanne Harvey, Bob Kingsley, Nan Kuntz, Lee
Lephart, Karen Maxwell, Marie Ranze, Bob Rossi, Mary Saraceno-Olsen, Diane Schermerhorn,
Linda Snyder, Marilyn Tamoschat, Frank Tedesco, Phil Urban and Bob Winchester. Thank you,
and best wishes for a happy retirement -- you will be missed!

Student artwork chosen for display at U.S.
Capitol
Congratulations to student Greg Goldberg, whose
artwork, "The Monster" has been named winner of the 23rd Annual Congressional
Arts Competition for the 21st Congressional District. Greg will be honored at a reception
in Washington, D.C. on June 14, and his art will be on display for the next year at the
U.S. Capitol. Congratulations! See

Students' papers published on Brown University web site
Congratulations to eight Niskayuna High School
students, whose papers have been published on the Brown University web site. The students
are: Nicole Bieber, Kathy Gisin, Caitlin Horgan, Mike Ryan, Tim Ryan, Shannon Whinnery,
Melissa Wu and Kelly Zebrowski. The posting also includes information about teacher
Catherine Snyder and her curriculum. Congratulations! Read their papers
Les Miserables performers recognized
Congratulations to high school senior Richard
Gatta, for winning "Outstanding Performer" from the Schenectady Light Opera
Company for his portrayal of Javert in the high school's production of Les Miserables
earlier this year. He also won an award for his lighting design. Also nominated for
"Outstanding Performer" were Jesse Conti (who played Jean Valjean), Ben Golub
(Enjolras) and Casey Larkin (Gavroche). Congratulations!
Mark Treanor, Paula Brinkman win Niskayuna Community Foundation teacher awards

Congratulations to Niskayuna High School teachers
Mark Treanor and Paula Brinkman, who were named recipients of the second annual Murray
Award for Excellence in Education on May 26. The award, presented by the Niskayuna
Community Foundation, includes $2,500 for professional development and recognizes teachers
for their high-quality teaching and professional leadership. Above from left, are student
and NCF selection committee member Tyler Ashley, Principal John Rickert, student and NCF
committee member Allison Weingarten, recipient Paula Brinkman, Superintendent Kevin
Baughman and NCF Board Member Christine Perlee. Congratulations!
Summer Driver Education registration
Summer Driver Education registration is from May
31 - June 8. Cost is $325; See Mrs. Panico in the high school office to sign up.

Birchwood raises $7,000 for handicap-accessible swingset

On April 30 the Birchwood Elementary School community came together for the Birchwood
Family Fun Walk, to raise funds to add a handicap-accessible swingset to the school's
playground in memory of Alyssa and Sabrina Barbiero and Nora Allegra Holiday-Harder. About
200 adults and children registered for the walk, and the event raised enough to purchase
the swingset and donate to the NBIA Disorders Association and the Pediatric Dialysis Unit
at Albany Medical Center. Congratulations Birchwood!
Teacher traveling to Japan through Fulbright program
Congratulations to High School teacher Peter
Melito, who has been selected to participate in the Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher
Program. He will travel to Japan for three weeks in November 2005, learning about the
Japanese culture and educational system.
Big NYSSMA event coming -- help needed!
Niskayuna schools are
hosting a huge New York State School Music Association festival
on June 3 and 4 and many volunteers are needed.
