Niskayuna teachers recognize community
with Annual Cookie Drive
The
Niskayuna Teachers Association (NTA) held its annual cookie
drive on February 10, delivering boxes of cookies to 14
Niskayuna agencies, to thank them for their service to the
community. Organizations receiving cookies included the
Niskayuna police and fire departments and Alterra Wynwood staff.
Shown in the photo, middle school students helped with boxing
the cookies, which were donated by teachers from around the
district.
Craig students celebrate 100 days of
school

Craig Elementary School students in Kimberly Fuda and Sharon
Hafensteiner's classes celebrated 100 days of school -- and brushed
up on their math skills -- during a morning of activities on
February 17. The students, who are in kindergarten or fourth grade,
also collected 100 pair of mittens and gloves to donate to Northeast
Parent & Child Society's children's residence.
Van Antwerp students celebrate "Souper
Bowl" by helping others
Van Antwerp Middle
School students in teacher Mike Pletman's English classes played
"Souper Bowl" Jeopardy recently, collecting more than 120 cans
of soup to donate to a local food pantry while answering
questions about different middle school subjects. Great job
students!
Craig Elementary School students benefit
from partnership with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

This week Craig
fourth-graders in Mary Gildea's class tested how electrical
circuits work through an online program, "Exploring
Connectivity," coordinated by Dr. Don Millard, a Niskayuna
parent and director of the Academy of Electronic Media at RPI.
The college has received a National Science Foundation grant to
create teaching materials about engineering topics, and Millard
and Gildea are collaborating to create materials for
fourth-graders. Students will also be exploring the program with
their parents. To try out the program, go to the

residents, and is available in all schools, Niskayuna Town
Hall and the Niskayuna town library.

Preparing for September: 8th graders visit
Niskayuna High School
All
eighth graders got an introduction to Niskayuna High School,
including classes offered, during an orientation program January
25. In the photo, teacher Mr. DeSimony talks about automotive
technology classes. The orientation process continues with an
evening for parents -- Gr. 8 Parent Orientation with
Directors/Administrators -- on February 10 at 7 p.m.
Students get first-hand knowledge from
Chinese instructor
Xianhou
Li, an American Field Service (AFS) visiting instructor from
China, spoke with students in Advanced Placement Macroeconomic
classes on January 14 about globalization and how it has changed
China and its relationship with the rest of the world. Xianhou
Li will be visiting Niskayuna High School all school year.
