Van Antwerp students are reigning Middle School
Science Bowl regional champs For
the third straight year, a team of students from
Van Antwerp Middle School captured the regional
title in the Middle School Science Bowl and will
advance to the national competition in June.
On Saturday, March 3, Van Antwerp’s team was
among 10 middle school teams from across upstate
New York vying for the regional championship at
the GE Global Research Center in Niskayuna. The
Science Bowl tests the academic knowledge of
middle school teams during a fast-paced
Jeopardy-style competition answering
questions in the categories of science and math. Student teams
also face off in a hydrogen fuel cell car
competition, which provides “hands-on” science
and engineering experience and challenges
students to design, build and race model cars.
Science teacher and coach Connie Soron said the
Van Antwerp team won the fuel cell car races and
earned perfect scores on the fuel cell quizzes.
“They were also successful in every round of the
academic competition,” she added.
As regional champions, the VA team comprised of
the following four students, plus one alternate
and coach, will travel to the national
competition in Denver: Thomas Mason (captain),
Michael Barnes, Gabriel Holodak, Nicholas Wolfe,
and Jaclyn Dobies (alternate). Congratulations
also to team members Alison Snyder and Jason Xu
who participated in designing, building and
racing the hydrogen fuel cell car at the
regional competition.
The U.S. Department of Energy sponsors the
National Science Bowl for student teams at both
the middle and high school levels. The academic
competition challenges students to learn more
about math and science and raises awareness
about careers in those fields.
