Niskayuna
student musicians to share stage with
Schenectady Symphony Orchestra at Proctor’s
Theatre March 16
March
is “Music in Our Schools Month,” and to
celebrate, Niskayuna High School Orchestra
students will perform alongside professional
musicians in a shared-stands concert with the
Schenectady Symphony Orchestra on Friday, March
16 at 7:30 p.m. at Proctor’s Theatre in
Schenectady.
This extraordinary educational experience and
mentoring opportunity between Niskayuna’s
student musicians and the SSO’s professional
instrumentalists will include a combined
rehearsal Friday afternoon followed by the
evening’s concert. The two orchestras will join
forces to perform several challenging classical
pieces including Symphonic Metamorphoses of
Themes of Weber by Paul Hindemith, Serenade for
Strings by Peter Tchaikovsky and Symphony No. 2
by Jean Sibelius. The performances will be
conducted by SSO Director Charles Schneider, and
NSO Director Christopher Neubert.
“This is a unique opportunity for many of our
musicians to work with students and provide
insight into how music can be a part of their
lives beyond their high school and college
years,” said SSO Executive Director Christine
Mason.
Admission is $7.50/adults, $5/students 8-18, and
free for children under 8. Tickets may be
purchased from Proctor's Theatre box office at
346-6204 or from the Schenectady Symphony
Orchestra at 372-2500.
The shared-stands program is funded by the
generosity of the New York State Council on the
Arts, the Community Foundation for the Capital
Region’s Niskayuna Community Foundation, and the
William Gundry Broughton Charitable Private
Foundation, and the support of members of the
Schenectady Symphony Orchestra Association.
