Niskayuna voters approve EXCEL/Safety Enhancement Project by
a wide margin
On Tuesday, Feb. 27, residents in the Niskayuna Central School District approved a proposed $4.7 million project that will further strengthen student safety and campus security at each of the district's eight buildings. A tally of votes showed that 80 percent of voters approved the project with 640 yes votes to 157 no votes.
The plan calls for improvements that use the latest technology to safeguard students such as intrusion detection devices, a comprehensive closed-circuit television security system and electronic access controls. It will also provide additional exterior and perimeter lighting, and modifications to main entrances for better supervision of access to buildings during regular school hours. The cost of the proposed project will be covered 100 percent by applying EXCEL funds and traditional building aid.
"We
are very pleased with the outcome of the vote and thank
residents for their continued support of education," said
Superintendent Kevin Baughman. "The measures in this
project will allow us to provide an even safer and more secure
environment for learning and teaching."
