Niskayuna
student musicians tour Europe this summer
Eight
Niskayuna band and choral students joined other
young musicians from around the northeast for
the American Music Abroad Red Tour earlier this summer.
The band and choir students performed nine concerts during a
16-day European tour that took them to France,
Belgium, Austria, and Germany. During the tour, students
had an opportunity to visit famous sites
and landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Demolition
of C-Hall begins

On
Tuesday, Aug. 14, crews began demolishing C-Hall at Niskayuna
High School to prepare for a new two-story classroom addition.
In the weeks since school ended, crews have been dismantling the
structure from within. In July,
C-Hall was partitioned off for asbestos abatement. Electricity,
water and heating systems were disconnected, and a temporary
barrier wall was constructed to separate C-Hall from the rest of
the building. Crews will work double shifts, six days a week to
demolish the existing wing. Once demolition is complete,
construction on the new wing can begin.

Construction,
renovations well underway this summer on district's facilities
improvements project
Students
and staff returning to four of Niskayuna Central School
District's eight school buildings in September can expect to see
significant changes as the first phase of the district’s $94.5
million building project, approved by voters in 2006, began this
summer.

Glencliff elementary schools, Van Antwerp Middle School and
Niskayuna High School. View a

the four schools.
New
traffic patterns established at Niskayuna High School
Construction and ongoing site work have resulted in the need to
alter traffic patterns at the high school. As of September, the
front traffic circle will no longer be available for use. This
development will affect school bus drivers, students, staff and
parents.

Tax rates
finalized for 2007-08
On August 20, the
Niskayuna Board of Education adopted final tax
rates for the 2007-2008 school year. For most
Niskayuna Central School District residents,
those rates are just below the tax rate increase
projected during the school budget vote in May.
As a result of changes in assessed values and
equalization rates, Niskayuna residents will see
their tax rate increase 4.24 percent from $27.63
to $28.79 per $1,000 of taxable assessed value —
which is slightly lower than the 4.25 percent
increase district officials had estimated in
May.

Bargains
found at Van Antwerp School Store days before school opens

Who
needs Staples, when Niskayuna’s middle school students can
purchase their binders, pencils, erasers, folders and other
essential supplies at their own school store — at bargain
prices? In the days leading up to the Grade 6 orientation on
Aug. 29, the Van Antwerp Middle School Store has been open for
business and filled with students and their parents stocking up
on supplies. The first week of school, VA’s School Store will be
open at lunch time and for extra hours from 3:20-3:50 p.m.
Parent and student volunteers will begin working the school
store's regular business hours the week of Sept. 10.

the event, which was published in the district calendar as
Monday, Aug. 27. Also, new entrants and Grade 9 students should
call the Counseling Center at 382-2511, ext. 4331 to reserve a
