Members of the Class of 2006 return for Alumni Visitation Day to discuss college experience, share advice with high school students
Photo of Niskayuna graduates discussing college choices/experience A little more than six months after graduation, approximately 36 members of the Class of 2006 returned to Niskayuna High School for Alumni Visitation Day on January 5.
The now second-semester college freshmen were on hand to share advice and answer questions about college life – both social and academic.
Some of the most prestigious schools in the country – including Boston College, Cornell University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), New York University, Princeton and Stanford – were represented by alumni who explained why they chose certain schools.
Rachel Lieberman, who studies creative writing, offered her number one reason for choosing Chester College, a small liberal arts school in New England.
“Chester has a good internship program and that is important to me,” she said. “I want to have the work experience an internship provides, and eventually be able to make money doing something I like.”
Elena Lecce chose Drexel University because of its reputation. “It is one of the top two fashion design schools in the country,” she said.
During breakfast, alumni had an opportunity to catch up with each other and visit with high school faculty, administrators and counselors. Small groups of up to four alumni then headed off to classrooms to discuss topics ranging from the admissions process to changes in their sleeping patterns, and offer tips on handling the college workload and adjusting to dorm life and roommates.
Erik Donhowe, who attends Stanford University, was one of many alumni who recounted how their Niskayuna education helped prepare them for the rigors of higher education.
“The AP courses and honors classes I took here really helped prepare me for college – especially AP Calculus with Mr. Monahan,” he said.
Nicole Beiber, a freshman at MIT, agreed. “So far I haven’t felt stressed by the work,” she said. “It just feels like I am studying the next in a sequence of courses I took while here.”
Members of the Class of 2006 were invited to return to their alma mater for this annual event if they expressed an interest in participating in alumni visitation day on a survey they completed before graduation in June.
