Building Project News
Construction
and renovations
for the district's $94.5 million construction project are in full
swing at four of the district's eight buildings. Construction will be in phases, with
all work scheduled to be completed by 2010.
Winter
2007-08 building project progress report
Construction crews continued to plow ahead with the district’s
building project despite a snowy December and icy temperatures
throughout most of January.
Craig
Crews have enclosed Craig school’s new four-classroom addition and
masonry work on the outside wall has begun. Installation of the
infrastructure necessary for plumbing and electrical systems is
underway.

Masonry work on classrooms additions on the building’s north and
south ends is complete, and contractors have moved inside the
structure to stud in the walls for a total of five new classrooms.
Infrastructure requirements such as ductwork and water lines for
electrical, plumbing and heating systems are in place for both
additions.

Van
Antwerp
Boiler conversions continue at Van Antwerp to adapt from the old
steam system to a new, more efficient hot-water heating system. Work
crews changed out breakers for the new electrical system during the
holiday recess. A new, large cooling tower – a significant component
of the building’s new ventilation system – will be hoisted by crane
to the rooftop in February. During the upcoming winter recess in
February, air handlers in VA’s media center will be exchanged.

High School
In December, approximately 30 percent of the 300 geothermal wells
necessary for the high school’s new heating system had been drilled.
Three rigs, which have the ability to dig one 400-foot-deep well per
day, will continue drilling through the winter, although production
may fall off slightly due to a decrease in temperatures. Despite
that, the district’s project manager is optimistic that construction
of a new parking lot over the well field will be completed and ready
by Fall 2008.
Foundations for the new media center and two-story classroom
addition at the high school are mostly complete. The structural
steel is expected to be delivered in early February, workers will
then begin setting the steel.

District
gets new phones
Van Antwerp and Iroquois middle schools, the district office,
transportation and maintenance departments “rang” in 2008 with new
phone systems. The elementary schools and the high school will be
connected to the new district-wide telephone system before the end
of the school year.
“Our new phone system will significantly improve communication
between buildings,” Superintendent of Schools Kevin Baughman said,
“and the outside world.”
