LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM LEVELS

Parents: In the new American Red Cross Learn to Swim program, children and youth progress from Levels 1 through Level 6. The objective is to teach children to swim and to be safe in, on, and around the water. The prerequisite for each level is a successful demonstration of the skills taught in the preceding level.

Use the following ARC guided criteria to help you when deciding at which level to register your child. The ARC/WSI certified instructors will evaluate the child’s skill and comfort level and if necessary, will reassign the child to the appropriate level of instruction.

Pre-school to Kindergarten, Beginner & up: general age group is 3-4 years old and up.*  Children are introduced to personal safety and basic skills appropriate to their level of confidence; promotes confidence in the beginner. Parent does not have to be in the pool with the child but the parent or adult designee must be pool-side.

*Child must be able to touch the bottom of the 3-foot shallow end of the pool.

Level 1- Introduction to Water Skills:
general age group is K-2 -  Level 1: Children are introduced to the aquatic environment. With the instructor’s support, the student is taught the following elementary aquatic skills: floating, basic swimming on front and back, and submerging under water for the first time.

Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills:
general age group is K-grade 2/3 - Level 2: Students learn the fundamental skills without instructor support. This marks the beginning of true locomotion skills. Students are able to move around independently in shallow water. Alternating arms and legs on their back and front to lay the foundation for future strokes.

Level 3 - Stroke Development: general age group is grades 2/3 & up - Level 3: Builds on the skills in Level 2 by providing guided practice in coordinating front and back crawl. Students should feel comfortable in the deep water. Introduction to treading water and kneeling dives are in the deep water. To move to Level 4, students must be able to swim 25 yards front and back.

Level 4 - Stroke Improvement
:
general age group is grades 3/4 -
Level 4: Increase endurance by swimming familiar strokes (front and back crawl, elementary back stroke) for greater distances, includes sidestroke, breaststroke introduced, and turning at the wall.

Level 5 - Stroke Refinement: general age group is grades 5/6 & up - Level 5: Coordinate and refine all strokes: front and back crawl, butterfly, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, and sidestroke. Introduces the flip turn on front and back.

Level 6 - Personal Water Safety: general age group is grades 6 & up, depending on strength and skill levels - Level 6: Refines the strokes so students swim them with ease, efficiency, and power over greater distances. Level 6 is designed with "menu" options that include personal water safety, lifeguard readiness (not the Life Guard Certification course), fundamentals of diving and fitness swimming.
