Who can be a member of the Niskayuna Swimming
and Diving Team?
Any female student in the Niskayuna School
District who is in 9th to 12th grade.
It is
advantageous for the athletes to come to this
activity with an understanding of the basics of
swimming and diving.
What do I need to do to be a member?
Pick up the Athletic Handbook from the Senior
High School Athletic Office. Complete the
information in the packet, get a physical (forms
included in the packet) once every year, and
turn in the completed forms Nurse’s Office in
the Senior High School. For more information
contact the Athletic Office at 382-2511 x4360.
What equipment do I need to participate with
the team?
Swimmers and divers will need to have a swimming
suit ($30-$70). It is recommended that the
athletes who desire to swim should have swimming
goggles ($5-$20) and a swimming cap ($2-$6).
Individuals desiring to swim may also consider
having a finis snorkel ($25-$40). Individuals
desiring to dive may wish to have a chamois
($12-$15) for drying off between dives in
practice and meets.
What other expenses may be encountered
besides the equipment cost?
The swimming and diving team selects a team suit
each season. This is a suit which is used only
at swimming and diving meets. The team suit
after being used for one season generally
becomes a good practice suit for the following
season. Team swim caps may also be purchased.
Between the team suits and caps one can quickly
identify the Niskayuna team members both on deck
and in the water. There are some activities
which may require some monetary input.
At the last home meets of the season there is
Senior Night. The swimmers and divers usually
buy flowers for the Seniors which the Juniors
present prior to the start of the second half of
the meet.
What can I do to prepare for the season?
Swim or dive on your own or join a swimming or
diving team. Possible swimming opportunities may
be found at the Niskayuna Town Pool, Schenectady
Jewish Community Center for summer leagues or
the Albany Starfish, Schenectady Sharks for year
round swimming. Check with the websites the
Starfish or Sharks, check with other USA
Swimming clubs or check with the YMCA to see if
they have a competitive swimming program. Diving
opportunities may be found at the RPI or Union
pools. There are other programs also available
you just have to look to find the program that
fits your needs.
Where do we practice?
The athletes practice at the Niskayuna Senior
High School pool. The pool is located at the
west end of the high school. The pool area has
two separate areas. The main competition pool is
a 8 lane 25 yard/meter course. The main pool is
13 feet deep at the starting end and 4 feet deep
in the shallow end. A separate shallow area 20
yard long and 3 feet deep.
When is the Swimming and Diving season?
The 2008 Girls Swimming and Diving season starts
on August 18 and the season concludes on
November 22. Not all athletes will compete
through the November 22 date. Many athletes will
complete their season at the Sectional
Championships November 6-8. The athletes who
qualify for the State Championships will compete
through November 22nd.
How does the swimming and diving program
work?
The swimmers and divers are in a participative
sport. Practices are every day except Sundays,
which every member is expected to attend.
The key to
success in any endeavor is to practice the
skills and to practice the skills consistently.
There are 10 meets (8 duals & 2
invitational) and the championships. At each
meet every member of the team will have an
opportunity to participate.
The team goal is
to help develop well-rounded individuals who
enjoy the water and the activities associated
with competitive swimming and diving.
