Board of Education Policy 4810: Teaching About Controversial Issues

The public schools have the responsibility to provide appropriate opportunities for the study of controversial issues. The responsibility of teachers in the preparation and presentation of curricular materials includes the responsibility to ensure objectivity, competence, and respect for people and opinions.

Teachers should refrain from including their own opinions in assignments about controversial issues and should avoid using materials and methods which are likely to adversely affect the attainment of the district’s instructional goals. The guidance of the departmental chairperson, subject coordinator, or Building Principal should be sought and followed for the treatment of controversial issues.

The prior approval of the Building Principal should be obtained for all guest speakers.
