Art & Design Department

Mission Statement

The Niskayuna Department of Art & Design fosters the creative development of each student through the sequential building of skills and vocabulary that supports effective visual communication in our 21st-century society.

Our goal is for all students to develop a life-long appreciation for the visual and media arts through creating and responding to works of art, with opportunities for self- exploration, expression, and reflection.

We strive to provide a learning environment that challenges students to solve problems, think critically, and communicate visually. Connections to cultures, history, and other disciplines inspire students to think, learn, create, and ask questions about the world around them.

Our young artists have the opportunity to express and share their ideas and individuality by showcasing their artwork in multiple exhibitions throughout the district and community.

The NiskArt Gallery

The NiskArt Gallery is an Arts In Education facility that is enjoyed by the whole community. It is unique in its conception as a school, family, and community center, connecting people through the visual arts. From a community-based Gallery Committee, which serves as an “arts network” and aids in the selection of artists, to the school-based, Gallery Club, which fosters authentic art gallery experiences for students, the gallery is exceptional.

Gallery exhibits feature award-winning work by Niskayuna students as well as local, regional, and national artists. Exhibiting artists are honored with an opening or closing reception and the shows are publicized, listed, and reviewed in major area newspapers. The gallery is secure and all artwork is insured. The gallery is non-profit. The exhibiting artists’ contact information is available upon request.
