facilities utilization advisory committee

At its March 5, 2013, meeting, the Niskayuna Board of Education passed a resolution to form the Facilities Utilization Advisory Committee to investigate options for school building and grade level configurations, including attendance zones, suitable for meeting student program needs through the 2018.

The committee was charged with obtaining and analyzing demographic data, including enrollment and population projections and information on residential construction within the Niskayuna School District. The committee includes approximately 40 members of the school community, and is primarily comprised of community members.

The district sought volunteers for the committee during May/June 2013. The facilitator of the Committee was Sean Brady, Prism Decision Systems, LLC. All committee meetings were held from 5–9 pm in the Niskayuna HS Media Center. The committee's meetings were open to anyone interested in attending and observing the process.

Recommendations from the committee were presented to the school board on Dec. 3, 2013. Please note that the recommendations were advisory in nature and will be considered by the Board of Education for implementation. Learn more about their presentation to the board.

At the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, February 4, the Board voted unanimously to table the recommendations of the Facilities Utilization Advisory Committee and discussion of a school closing for 2014-15.

At the meeting, Board members spoke about the need for the district and the community to move forward following the months-long discussion of school configuration and facilities, and said that they would continue to work to preserve programs for students to the greatest extent possible during this prolonged period of economic challenges for schools.
