Amira Slaoui, a 5th grade student at Hillside won the school competition of the National Geographic Bee on Jan. 29 which gives her a chance at a $50,000 college scholarship. Amira was one of twelve Hillside 4th and 5th grade students who volunteered to participate, spending two months preparing and studying at home and during recess in the library. read more
As part of our first grade health curriculum, first graders have been learning about good dental health habits. On Tuesday, Feb. 23, Lisa Kaminski, dental health educator froâ€‹m Capital District Pediatric Dentistry, paid a visit to the first graders at Hillside Elementary School. read more
Two Common Core Math Parent Nights were held in January where Niskayuna
teachers and administrators shared information to help parents get a better
understanding of the math being taught in elementary classrooms. Presenters also
provided parents with strategies to help children at home and debuted a Common
Core Mathematics video featuring Niskayuna students,
teachers and principals.

From fake snow and scented balloons to disappearing cups and rainbow colored
solutions, Hillside 5th grade students learned about the wonder of chemistry
from the Niskayuna High School Chem Demos Club on Thursday, Jan. 28.

Registered dietician Amy Imler visited first-grade students at Hillside Elementary School Jan. 15, to teach them about the importance of healthy eating and show them how to "eat the rainbow" with samples of a variety of fruits and vegetables. Imler, who works at ShopRite, introduced students to the five main food groups and encouraged them to think about their food choices in order to develop healthy habits.

This holiday season, Hillside Elementary School collected nearly $3,000 through their Giving Tree initiative to raise money for local families in need. Students, families, teachers and staff all donated to the Giving Tree. With each donation, a heart was placed on the tree. read more

Elks Lodge #1644 paid a special visit to Hillside third graders with
a very important gift - a dictionary for each student.
